In reaction to the domination of German music, musical nationalism made its appearance during the 19th century, first in various European countries (Spain, Finland, Czechoslovakia) and then, by the end of the century, in South America. There, this form of expression drew its inspiration from the rich material - musical as well as literary - which became, through 400 years of colonization, a totally new art.
Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Guastavino and Alberto Ginastera are to be considered among the most important and original Latin-American composers. Even if their style derives from Argentine musical heritage, they manage, through deepening and sublimation, to transform it into a universal language comparable to that of Albeniz, Sibelius or Dvorak, to mention only those.
